Title: What does Software Craftsmanship mean for someone starting out in their career.
Starting out in the world of development can be a daunting experience. What’s critical is that you learn as much as you can and importantly learn how to do things right. Elements of Software Craftsmanship can help guide you through this minefield.
Facilitator: Sheldon Lyne
In 2006, Sheldon graduated with a BSc (Electrical Engineering) from the University of the Witwatersrand and started working at Entelect as a Graduate Developer. During the time that Sheldon worked on Entelect’s development teams he designed and delivered systems spanning various domains, including the insurance, entertainment, auditing, manufacturing and logistics industries.
Since 2010 Sheldon started driving the day-to-day operational concerns of Entelect Software. A large portion of his initiatives were around the automation of the company’s processes, thus allowing Entelect to scale into the future. Since 2015, Sheldon has also included Entelect’s technology direction in his portfolio.
Title: Mapping a software development career journey.
Software is eating the world, which is great news for developers. People are switching careers to software development, and a fair number of developers have just kind of “fallen into” it. You don’t need a formal education to get into software development and become a good developer, but how can we become better software developers? In this session we’ll explore what a map for growing as a software developer might look like, highlighting areas of learning that holds value in the long run.
Facilitator: Janco Wolmerans
Janco is a software craftsman on a lifelong journey of understanding the fundamental nature of software development. He spends most of his time building stuff he hopes will add value to someone's life, as well as coaching, mentoring and journeying with fellow software craftspeople.
